Board Chairperson
With a lengthy career of helping children with disabilities, it’s no surprise that God has placed Mike in a ministry such as SMSC where making an eternal difference in a student’s life is the number one goal. After 35 years of teaching PE at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind, Mike went on to serve as the Director for HALTER Therapeutic Riding Program for 15 years.
Of all of his activities and service at his church, his favorite is volunteering with the SMSC released time students. He enjoys seeing students’ lives impacted and is delighted that many of them give their lives to Jesus. After serving in this capacity for a year, Mike gladly accepted a position on the SMSC board. His love for Christ, experience, and motivation to put in the effort to help SMSC grow and succeed in their mission makes him a good fit for this position.
Mike has a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Physical Education from University of South Carolina and a Master’s in Education Administration from USC-Upstate. Now that he is retired, he has more time for riding horses and traveling with his wife, Marilyn. They have been married for 50 years and raised two sons, one of which was killed in an accident in 2010. Mike and Marilyn enjoy spending time with their 3 grandsons. On a sunny day, you might find them out hunting or fishing together.
